Agbonlahor shares verdict on Celtic appointing Lampard after major development

Frank Lampard would not take the Celtic job if he was offered it, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England forward insisted the Hoops do not have the transfer budget that would convince Lampard to return to management.

Football Insider revealed that the ex-England midfielder had sensationally pulled out of the race to become the next Crystal Palace manager.

Lampard feared it will be a huge rebuilding job and Palace could be pulled into a relegation battle next season.

Alongside Eddie Howe and Sean Dyche, Lampard formed a three-man shortlist to succeed Roy Hodgson.

Dyche has now emerged as the frontrunner and Palace have been told by Burnley it will take a £3million compensation package to prise him away from Turf Moor.

Celtic reached a verbal agreement with Howe at the beginning of April but he is yet to put pen to paper on a deal.

Asked whether Lampard could emerge as an option for the Bhoys, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I just think Lampard’s very clever.

“He’s not going to rush into a job when he doesn’t need to.

“Look at Crystal Palace, there are so many players they need to bring in. If they’re saying to someone like Lampard ‘You’re only getting £40m’ he’s thinking ‘You must be joking, I’m not going there then.’

“The number of players that Palace need they need £100million or £150million.

“He’s probably spoken to the owners who have said ‘This is all there is’. Why would you put yourself in that position? Especially when it’s going to be a crucial job for him.

“Maybe that’s the reason he didn’t want the Crystal Palace job and it’s probably similar to Celtic. I can’t see them giving a manager big funds.

“It’s big decisions for these managers, you can’t just rush into these jobs.”

Lampard has been out of work since leaving Chelsea earlier this year.

Across his spells at Chelsea and Derby County, the 42-year-old won 68 of his 141 games (48.2 per cent) as a manager.

In other news, Celtic are to terminate the contract of a £4.5million-valued star in a shock move.
