Gabby Agbonlahor has suggested an injury-enforced centre-back partnership of Joel Matip and Joe Gomez could cost Liverpool a chance at Champions League qualification.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted injuries are not the only "problem" for Jurgen Klopp and singled Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold for criticism.

According to journalist Paul Joyce (31 January), Konate is facing up to three weeks on the treatment table with a hamstring injury.

Joyce claims the France international will miss Premier League clashes against Wolves, Everton, and Newcastle - and is also a doubt for the first leg against Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Virgil van Dijk is also out after suffering an injury against Brentford in January and is yet to return to training.

Liverpool sit ninth in the Premier League after 19 games - some ten points adrift of a Champions League spot.

When asked if Matip and Gomez is a good enough partnership to make up the places, Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “Not for me, no.

“Liverpool play Wolves next, and you can easily see a Wolves win with Van Dijk and Konate both out.

“It’s one problem for Liverpool, but it’s not just injuries. There’s a problem at Liverpool all over the pitch.

“Salah’s not firing, Alexander-Arnold looked angry after he came off against Brighton. Klopp will need to earn his money here.”

“As much as they want to rebuild in the summer, these things could end their hopes of finishing in the top four.

"I think missing out on Champions League football could cost them the chance to get top players through the door.

“Bellingham won’t want to join a Europa League side.”
