Gabriel Agbonlahor has called on Patrick Bamford to be axed against Chelsea and given a few days off from Leeds United training.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aston Villa and England striker insisted the 27-year-old looks tired and the Whites need to sign a back up-in the summer.
Bamford has started every Premier League game this season but has only scored once in his last five games after he failed to find the net in Leeds’ 2-0 loss to West Ham on Monday.
Leeds signed striker Rodrigo Moreno in the summer from Valencia but he has been used primarily in midfield.
He failed to impress when he played 45 minutes as a lone striker in the Whites’ disastrous 3-0 defeat to Crawley Town in the FA Cup in January.
Asked for his assessment of Bamford’s recent performances, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “He looks a bit tired.
“He looks like he needs a rest. When teams look at Leeds and how they play, they’ll look to stop him.
“Aston Villa did it amazingly, they got in tight to Bamford, they knew he wasn’t going to run in behind because he hasn’t got the pace.
“They got really tight and smothered him. West Ham were similar, he had a couple of chances that he missed.
“He looks like a player that needs a rest, a week off, a few days off training and a game off.
“It’s probably something that Leeds need to look at in the summer, bring in a quality back up to Bamford so he doesn’t have to play every minute.”
