Agbonlahor tells Newcastle to sign newly-available Barkley after Aston Villa spell ends

Newcastle United would be the “perfect move” for Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa forward backed his old manager Steve Bruce to get the best out of Barkley.

Football Insider revealed on May 25 that Bruce has been handed a summer transfer budget of between £8-£10million.

He is planning to spend the entirety of that on one key player and use the loan and free-agent market to bolster his squad.

The Athletic reported on May 27 that Barkley would interest Newcastle, and Football Insider has learned he will be once again made available for loan by Chelsea.

The 32-time England international spent the campaign at Aston Villa where he failed to live up to expectations after a fine start.

After returning from a hamstring at the end of January, Barkley did not provide an assist and scored just once in 18 Premier League appearances.

Asked whether he could resurrect his career at St. James’ Park, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I think it would be a good fit. Steve Bruce would get the best out of him.

“Ross Barkley needs to go somewhere now, he’s at a crossroads in his career, he’s 28. He needs to go somewhere and have a really good season, not just a few months like he did at Villa.

“It could be the perfect move for him to go play week in, week out.”

Barkley now has 226 Premier League games under his belt across spells with Everton, Chelsea and Villa.

The 27-year-old has scored 28 goals and provided 31 assists in that time.
