Agbonlahor: Terry will block Davis leaving Aston Villa

Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed John Terry and Dean Smith will not want to let Keinan Davis leave Aston Villa on loan this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer insisted the club cannot just rely on Wesley to be Ollie Watkin’s backup.

The Telegraph’s John Percy reported yesterday (July 22) Championship side Stoke City have held talks over a loan move for Davis and are “hopeful” of completing a deal.

It comes after the Athletic reported on 18 July nine Championship clubs were racing to sign the striker on loan.

Davis still has three years left to run on his contract and showed glimpses of promise last season.

The 23-year-old’s 15 Premier League appearances, 14 of which came from the bench, yielded one goal and one assist.

Asked whether now was the right time for the 23-year-old to leave on loan, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “No, I don’t think so.

“It just doesn’t make sense for Villa to send him out on loan. With only Wesley as backup, I just don’t see Villa allowing him to go out on loan unless they bring in a striker.

“He showed last season he can be a handful when he comes on. John Terry and Dean Smith will be big fans of his and will want him to stay.

“There’s nothing to gain for Villa by letting him go out on loan.”

Davis has now played 85 times across all competitions for Villa.

He has scored six times and provided seven assists for the Midlands giants.
