Gabby Agbonlahor has heaped praise on “perfect” Aston Villa right-back Ahmed Elmohamady ahead of Saturday’s clash against Leeds United.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Villa captain insisted the 33-year-old was “outstanding” against one of the best wingers in the league – Harvey Barnes.
Elmohamady was making just his second Premier League start of the season at Villa Park with Matty Cash unavailable with a hamstring injury that will sideline him for “several more weeks“.
Cash, a £16million summer signing from Nottingham Forest, has established himself as Dean Smith’s first-choice right-back ahead of the Egyptian and Frederic Guilbert who left on loan in January.
Against Leicester, Elmohamady registered four clearances, four tackles and a pass completion rate of 76 per cent, according to sofascore.
He is set to oppose in-form Leeds left-winger Jack Harrison in Saturday’s clash at Elland Road.
Asked for his assessment of Elmohamady’s performance, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I thought he was outstanding.
“Against one of the top three, top four wingers in the league and he was outstanding.
“He was physical, he was left one-on-one a lot and he did the best that any right-back could do against Barnes.
“He’s looking like the perfect player to come in when Cash is injured. He did very well.”
Sunday’s game marked Elmohamady’s 122nd appearance in Claret and Blue since his £1million move from Hull City in the summer of 2017.
Only Jack Grealish has more appearances for the club in the current squad than the 87-time Egypt international.
