Aleksandar Mitrovic could quit Newcastle next summer, according to his agent.

The Northern Echo claim that Napoli, who have admired Mitrovic since his days with Anderlecht, are keen on taking the £14million striker to Serie A in the New Year.

Rai Sport in Italy reports that Mitrovic is on a shortlist of targets compiled by Napoli but the Echo emphatically quashed the possibility of a winter departure for the 22-year-old.

This is corroborated by the striker's agent Nenad Jestrovic, although he did not rule out the possibility of his client quitting St James' Park next summer.

Asked about the possibility of a January transfer, Jestrovic told the Echo: “It is very unlikely at the moment. The only certainty right now is that he will end the season at Newcastle United.

“In the past, there was some contact (with Napoli) but for now it’s out of the question. He will spend another six months in England and then will decide what to do with his future.”

Mitrovic is under contract until 2020 and has been given an extended run in the team after a difficult start to the campaign marked by injury and suspensions.

He has scored five goals in 10 matches in all competitions, including consecutive doubles against Preston in two of Newcastle's last three matches.

Mitrovic did not add to his goal tally in Saturday's 2-0 win over Cardiff but teed up Christian Atsu for the opener to secure his second assist of the campaign.

He said: “The fans here are very special and the people here want to talk to you in the city about the team and football. That’s their passion.

“We need to keep the bond good between the fans and the club this season.

“It is an amazing feeling at the moment to be a player.”

In 46 matches in all competitions for Newcastle since joining in the summer of 2015 from Anderlecht, Mitrovic has scored 14 goals and supplied six assists.

In other Newcastle transfer news, the club pushed out the boat to land a Scottish wonderkid.
