Kristoffer Ajer could leave Celtic for as little as £5million this summer, according to Alex McLeish.
The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted a Premier League side could expect to pay a major fee for the 22-year-old centre-back.
As reported by the Daily Mail, Newcastle United are preparing an £8million bid to prise Ajer from Parkhead this summer.
It is stated Celtic value Ajer at a significantly higher price of £35million.
However, the 6ft 4in defender’s contract is set to expire next year, meaning the Hoops face missing out on a significant transfer windfall if not sold this summer.
As such, McLeish suggested Celtic may have to accept a bargain offer ahead of next season.
McLeish told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “Kristoffer Ajer would be a good addition for Newcastle. What sort of fee? Premier League, we’re talking £5-10million.
“I had Jean-Alain Boumsong, got him on a free transfer from Auxerre. He was only with us six, seven months and he went to Newcastle. Rangers made £8million out of him.
“In terms of Ajer, Scandinavia is a great breeding ground. They have some gems in there, some diamonds. Finding those diamonds results in an Ajer. You see how well Scandinavians do in these World Cup groups.
“Good players, players you can trust. When you’re sitting in the technical area watching the field, you know you’ve got guys out there you can trust. The Scandinavians have been a credit to world football.”
Ajer has been a regular for Celtic this season, with 41 appearances and a single goal under his belt across all competitions.
