Alex McLeish has tipped Kristoffer Ajer to snub a move from Celtic to Norwich City and wait for an elite club like Liverpool to bid.
The former Scotland boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 23-year-old would be hoping long-term suitors AC Milan would reignite their interest this summer.
As reported by the Scottish Sun, Norwich are considering making an £8million bid for the Celtic defender.
The Canaries are preparing for a season back in the Premier League after securing promotion from the Championship.
Ajer has been a mainstay for the Hoops this season, with 43 appearances under his belt.
However, his contract is set to expire next summer, meaning Celtic may be forced to cash in this year.
McLeish suggested Ajer would want to join a high-profile, competitive side when he leaves Parkhead.
As such, he admitted the defender may turn Norwich down.
McLeish told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge:“I think if he’s linked with AC Milan, if you’re talking is it AC Milan or Norwich, I would think he would choose Milan.
“He might feel Norwich will be in a battle next season in the lower part of the table. Who knows, they could do the magic Sean Dyche has been doing for years. They could climb up the table and get some incredible results.
“But the smart money is on the former rather than the latter.
“If it’s a choice between Milan, I would have an inkling that foreign guys, and I’m not bracketing it as different in terms of us Brits, but I think the lure of AC Milan may just be too big for any other contenders unless it’s Liverpool or someone.”
Ajer has a total of 173 appearances under his belt for Celtic.
