Alan Shearer: Arsenal ace needs to do this if he wants to be world class

By Amir Mir

Alan Shearer has stated that Arsenal ace Alexis Sanchez can only be considered “world class” if he helps his side lift the Premier League title at the end of the season.

Forward Sanchez scored a hat-trick and supplied an assist as Arsene Wenger’s men thrashed relegation threatened West Ham 5-1 on Saturday evening at the London Stadium.

On previous occasions, Shearer was criticised for saying Manchester City striker, Sergio Aguero is the only “world class” player in England’s top flight.

But after his sparkling performance against the Hammers which helped his side move into second place in the table, Shearer had this to say on Sanchez and the Chilean’s status.

“Arsenal are a much better team this year because of Sanchez,” said Shearer on Match of the Day. “I would also ask Arsene Wenger, if he is world class, why has he taken two years to play him centre-forward?

“I think that is what Arsenal have been missing in the last couple of years and is the reason why they have not won the title. They are in with a great chance, if he can stay fit and in that form.

“If he keeps showing that ability and wins the title for Arsenal then, yes [he is world class].”

Wenger has utilised Sanchez in a forward role this term, which has seen the tactical change pay off as he has been in blistering form.

In the Premier League, Sanchez has scored 11 goals in 14 games, including supplying five assists, which has helped Arsenal to within three points of leaders Chelsea.

His performances have also helped the north London club progress through to the knockout stages of the Champions League. Sanchez scored two goals and supplied four assists in those five games.

The Chilean international also helped his home country lift the Copa America in the summer when his side defeated Argentina on penalties.
