Alan Shearer: This manager has held talks with Aston Villa

By Amir Mir

Alan Shearer has claimed bookies favourite Steve Bruce has held talks over the vacant managerial post at Aston Villa.

Roberto Di Matteo was sacked as Villa manager on Monday, with former Birmingham City boss Bruce, the frontrunner to replace the Italian.

Now former Newcastle striker Shearer has lauded the managerial record of his fellow Geordie Bruce and backed him to take over the reigns at the Championship club.

“Well he’s spoke to them,” Shearer told TalkSport. “How the talks have gone I haven’t got a clue but it’s not surprising that the big clubs will want Brucey because when you look at his record for bringing clubs up from the Championship it is second to none.

“It’s a no-brainer that club will want to hire him and it depends whether he can go in and do things his own way.

“Again, when you look at how much has been spent by Aston Villa in the summer it’s an absolute fortune. So he’ll want more funds if he was to go in there.”

Former Manchester United defender Bruce has won four promotion during his managerial career, twice with Birmingham and on two occasions with Hull, most recently last season.

If Bruce is to take charge of the Villa Park club, then he will have the task of lifting a side that is languishing in 19th place, with ten points from 11 games.

The Midlands side have won only one game all season, with caretaker boss Steve Clarke currently in charge of first team duties.
