Shearer: This is what Tottenham need to do to overtake Chelsea in PL title run-in

By Will Butcher

Alan Shearer believes Tottenham must win all of their remaining six league games to win the Premier League.

Spurs reduced the gap to just four points last weekend after beating Bournemouth 4-0 at White Hart Lane, while Chelsea suffered a 2-0 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Shearer claimed that although Spurs have reduced the gap to just four points with six games to go, Chelsea’s remaining fixtures are easier.

Spurs still have to play against Arsenal and Man United, while Chelsea only face Everton, Watford and Southampton from the top half of the table.

“Mauricio Pochettino has seen his side win seven on the bounce home and away in the league” Shearer told the Sun. “But that will have to extend to 13 if they are to win the league.

“Yes, the gap on Chelsea is now back to four points. But look at the two clubs’ run-ins and Spurs are still going to need to win every league game from now until the end of the season.

“Even that may not be enough —  but at least there is a real title race on now.”

A three-minute double salvo saw Mousa Dembele and Son Heung-Min score in the first half to give Spurs a 2-0 advantage against Bournemouth, before Harry Kane and Vincent Janssen struck.

All eyes were on Old Trafford on Sunday, as Spurs looked for Jose Mourinho’s United to do them a favour against Antonio Conte’s league leaders.

Goals from Marcus Rashford and Ander Herrera sealed a 2-0 win for United, reducing the gap from seven to four at the top of the table.

Spurs go up against Chelsea on Saturday in the FA Cup semi-finals, with victory, potentially, having an effect on the title run-in in terms of mentality according to Danny Mills.
