Tottenham fans were shocked when Toby Alderweireld was dropped from the squad to face Stoke on Saturday and taken aback when manager Mauricio Pochettino said he was not getting in the side because of his form.
Most thought that signalled the end of his career at Tottenham and were waiting to see what the player would say.
He uses social media a lot and sends regular Twitter messages to fans and he didn’t disappoint, sending one straight after the 2-1 win at Stoke.
Alderweireld kept it completely professional though, despite what personal feelings he may have, saying “Solid win by the team”.
He hailed the performance of Christian Eriksen, who was awarded both goals despite Harry Kane trying to claim one.

Football Insider verdict:
You’ve got to admire Alderweireld. So many footballers say something rash on Twitter and end up in trouble and deleting their accounts. And it must have been pretty hard to take what Pochettino was saying without responding, after the form he’s shown for Spurs. Pochettino was unnecessarily harsh on Alderweireld – business is business but on form he’d walk into any side in the Premier League. By holding his head up high and sending a dignified and professional message like this, Alderweireld has shown that he’s a class act off the pitch as well as on it. Spurs might have amble back-ups but that shouldn’t diminish what Alderweireld has done for them and will go on to do for other teams.
