Newcastle United are now confident of keeping hold of star striker Alexander Isak despite strong interest from Chelsea, sources have told Football Insider.

The north-east giants had been in potential trouble with the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) as the 30 June accounts deadline approached.

But in a late twist on Sunday (30 June), the Tyneside club sold Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson to Brighton and Nottingham Forest respectively.

It is believed manager Eddie Howe was keen to keep both players but was resigned to cashing in to avoid losing a key member of the squad.

Sources say Howe is now looking to build around Isak, Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon - and will be given funds to improve his squad in the remainder of this window.

Isak has emerged as a top target for Chelsea as they search for a marquee new striker signing this summer.

The Sweden international, 24, hit 25 goals in 40 appearances across all competitions in the 2023-24 campaign - 36 of which came as part of the starting lineup.

He is under contract at St James' Park until June 2028 after arriving from Real Sociedad in 2022.

Newcastle finished seventh last term but missed out on qualification for the Europa Conference League.
