Alfredo Morelos expected to sign new Rangers deal 'soon' after stance confirmed - pundit

Frank McAvennie has suggested Alfredo Morelos will sign a new contract at Rangers “fairly soon”.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Celtic striker said the Gers won’t want to let Morelos leave for free when his contract expires next summer.

The 26-year-old has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Ibrox.

As quoted by Football Scotland (29 July), Giovanni van Bronckhorst said that talks are happening “at the moment” with the striker to extend his stay at the Glasgow club.

The manager added that Morelos is “more than open” to signing a new deal.

When asked why he thought it was taking so long for the Colombian to agree a new deal, McAvennie told Football Insider: “I think they might have been waiting for somebody to put in an offer for him.

I think it would be stupid not to give him a new contract. They won’t want to let him leave next year for nothing. I think they were just testing the water or maybe he was just testing the water.

I don’t know whether it’s him that’s holding back or them I don’t know. I can understand one of them might want to test the water but you’ve got to get him ready now and get him on the pitch.

They’re bringing in strikers now and he must see that. If a striker comes in and does well, whether Morelos is the best player or not, he’ll be on the bench.

The manager will know if he wants to stay or not. The sooner the better, just give him a contract or say that he’s going. It will be good for the Rangers supporters as well. But I’ve got a feeling he’ll stay because they’ll want to win the title back and they’ll need everyone to do that.

He’ll sign the contract fairly soon I would think.
