'An absolute must' - Exclusive: Darren Bent reacts as Everton plot reported 30-yr-old raid
Darren Bent claims that signing a new centre-back this summer is an “absolute must” for Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Tottenham and England striker insists that bolstering the heart of the defence must be a priority for the Toffees.
La Gazzetta Dello Sport report that the club are among those chasing a deal for Manchester United’s Chris Smalling this summer, with Michael Keane, Yerry Mina and Mason Holgate Ancelotti’s current options.
Everton have struggled to keep the opposition at bay this season, their 47 goals conceded the sixth-highest amount in the Premier League.
Bent says that recruiting at least one more defender is a necessity, while he thinks another central midfielder would not go amiss at Goodison Park.
Bent told Football Insider: “In the transfer window, you can strengthen all over the place but for Everton I’d definitely go and get another centre-half. Going forward they’re fine.

“Maybe another central midfielder, I like Andre Gomes but I do feel at times you do need maybe a bit more strength in depth.
“A defender, a centre-half, is an absolute must.”
Of the central defenders at Ancelotti’s disposal this season, Mina has played the most with 2,396 minutes in his 29 appearances.
The Italian boss started with Keane and Holgate in their last game before the postponement of fixtures, the Toffees slipping to a 4-0 defeat away at Chelsea.
