Paul Robinson heaped praise on Stoke City midfielder Joe Allen amid speculation that Newcastle United could be keen on his services.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former England international suggested that he thought the Magpies should be interested in the midfielder given his experience.

It was reported that Allen could leave in the New Year if an acceptable offer is received with it understood that Steve Bruce may look to revive the Magpies’ previous interest in the player.

Robinson explained that the 29-year-old would be an asset to any team and predicted that the Magpies may not be alone in the hunt for him.

When asked about Allen being linked to Newcastle, Robinson told Football Insider: “He’s going to be an asset to any team.

“And if Stoke are going to have a clear out, he’s got experience.

“He’s been at Stoke three or four years? Prior to that Liverpool and Swansea so he has Premier League experience.

“Spent time at a top club and he’s still only 29-year-old.

“To have a player of that ability, at that age, he’s got a good few years left in him.

“So if he was to become available, I think it may prick the ears of, let’s say a few mid-to-lower Premier League teams.”

Allen has played 20 times across all competitions for Stoke this season with him having scored three goals in those outings.

The experienced midfielder, who has 53 caps for Wales, has been with the Potters since joining from Liverpool in 2016 and is contracted to stay until 2022.

In other Newcastle United news, it can be REVEALED that the club have set their sights on signing two players from Everton in January.
