Analysis: The three key Newcastle players for Hull clash

COMMENT by Amir Mir

Championship leaders Newcastle take on Premier League strugglers Hull City in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup on Tuesday night.

Rafa Benitez’ side travel to Yorkshire knowing a win will take them to the semi-finals of the competition and within a step of the final.

Here, Football Insider analyses the three Magpies players who could be key to their success against Mike Phelan’s side.

Dwight Gayle

The former Premier League player is the top scorer in England’s second tier with 13 goals from 14 games.

After missing Newcastle’s 1-0 defeat against Blackburn on Saturday, the in-form striker could start against Hull and will target a defence that has conceded 28 goals in the Premier League.

His pace and movement will be a threat in a side that will look to play on the front foot and score early goals.

Mo Diame

Following his summer transfer from Hull to the north east, Diame will no doubt be looking to get one over on his former club.

His pace and power will be a reminder to the home crowd as to what they currently miss as the Senegal midfielder also loves a shot at goal.

The Magpies will no doubt want to dominate possession and Diame, if selected, will be key to their attacking play and defensive structure.

Jamaal Lascelles

The 23-year-old has been a key figure for the Magpies in the second tier this season, helping them keep eight clean sheets in 17 Championship games.

Lascelles’ ability to lead from the back, be dominant and physical in the air, will be important to the Toon Army recording another clean sheet.

In other Newcastle team news, Harry Maguire has urged his side to respect the Championship leaders.
