Celtic rising star Barry Coffey has agreed a new deal at the club after a breakthrough in negotiations, Football Insider can reveal.

The 18-year-old's previous deal was due to expire this summer, but the club have moved to tie him down to a fresh long-term contract.

A Celtic source has told Football Insider that an announcement is imminent to confirm that Coffey has penned the extension.

The Scottish champions have feared losing the teen ace, who is a central midfielder, on a free in the summer.

They have moved to get the paperwork finalised on an extension early in this window to prevent him being enticed to move.

The Republic of Ireland Under-19 international has yet to make his first-team debut for Neil Lennon's side.

But he is a regular in the club's reserves side and has made a big impression behind the scenes at their Lennoxtown headquarters.

He is highly-regarded within the corridors of power at Celtic Park and the club's academy and senior coaches have high hopes he will break into the first XI in the near future.

Celtic beat off interest from a number of Premier League clubs to sign Coffey in 2017.

The starlet is so highly rated that Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United were among the elite outfits who tried to sign him three years ago.
