Anthony Elanga is already finished at Newcastle, as bid submitted for Porto’s William Gomes

Anthony Elanga has done very little in his first season at St James’ Park to persuade Newcastle United fans that he’s worth £55million.

The 23-year-old was an electric figure during the 2024-25 campaign, notching six goals and 12 assists as Nottingham Forest finished seventh in the Premier League.

However, the winger has not been able to translate that form across to the North East this season, recording a total of four goal contributions in 45 appearances in all competitions.

The Magpies are currently sitting 14th in the league table, with no prospect of securing European football for next season, which could completely change Newcastle transfer chiefs’ plans this summer.

Newcastle United should already be looking to sell Anthony Elanga

Back in December, Mick Brown told Football Insider that Newcastle are already concerned about Elanga’s performances, and rightly so, given the amount of money spent on him during the summer.

Now, according to reports from Spain, the Magpies are amongst the clubs pushing hardest for the signature of Porto’s William Gomes, with Brazilian reports adding that a bid has already been submitted.

It is understood that the Portuguese giants value the 20-year-old right-winger as much as £60million, so if Eddie Howe’s side are to go in for him, selling Elanga appears like the most sensible idea.

Although Gomes is relatively inexperienced, he has more than proven himself in the Europa League this season, with four goals in 10 games, and it is unlikely to be long before he features for Brazil.

The Magpies may also need to replace Anthony Gordon

Anthony Gordon’s future should also be a concern for Eddie Howe, but not for the same reasons as Elanga.

The England international is heavily linked with an exit ahead of the summer, with Football Insider understanding that Liverpool have set sights on a “huge deal” for Gordon.

While Gomes is primarily a right-winger, he is more than capable of featuring on the opposite flank, and given that he’s a left-footer, he could be a perfect figure for Newcastle.

What is clear is that Howe’s side requires a huge shake-up in the summer, with the manager also under pressure, so it could be a very different-looking team once the 2026-27 campaign kicks off.
