Arsenal ahead of PL rivals in pursuit of international midfielder - report

By Derek Smithson

Arsenal are more likely to secure Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho than Premier League rivals Newcastle due to finances, according to a report.

Portuguese outlet Record claim that the Gunners are keen on the 25-year-old and previously tried to sign him in the 2015/16 campaign.

It is understood that Newcastle are also interested in signing the combative midfielder, but that Portuguese club Sporting are looking for a £26.8million deal.

The report details that Arsenal are prepared to make a fresh move for the Portugal international.

Carvalho has become a key player for Sporting since graduating from their academy and made 43 appearances last season across all competitions.

He is recognised as a defensive midfielder and is strong in possession, while also very good at breaking play up.

Carvalho helped Portugal win the European Championships in 2016 and is a key member for the international team.

Football Insider verdict:

Arsenal should definitely match the asking price for Carvalho as he would be a great fit at the Emirates Stadium. The 25-year-old would add some real steel to the midfield and appears to have the physical strength to play in England. Newcastle would be pulling off a remarkable signing if they landed Carvalho and Arsenal need to ensure they win the race. The Portuguese ace is already an accomplished footballer and has European experience under his belt. Arsenal have already signed Alexandre Lacazette to show their intent in the window and this would be another class addition if he joins.
