Arsenal backed to complete Mari sale after Wheatley reveal - Campbell

Kevin Campbell has backed Arsenal to sell Pablo Mari next year amid interest from Flameng.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gunners and Everton striker said Mikel Arteta and Edu “have to start clearing the decks” in preparation for the return of William Saliba, 20.

According to Football.London‘s Chris Wheatley (29 November), Flamengo are considering a move for Mari, 28, in January.

The centre-back is said to be considering his options having fallen down the pecking order at the Emirates.

Ben White and Gabriel Magalhaes have emerged as the first-choice pairing at the Emirates this season.

When asked by Football Insider if a deal for Mari would be good for all parties, Campbell said: “Arsenal have to start clearing the decks, definitely.

“Saliba is coming back next season so they need to make room for him. Saliba has been doing so well in France.

“People are saying, ‘The manager doesn’t fancy him.’ But he does fancy him.

“The key is, when he does come back he needs to be given opportunities. He needs to be starting or close to starting. I think that will be the case next season.

“For that reason, a deal for Pablo Mari could be beneficial in the long run. It could help Saliba’s development.”

Mari has made just three appearances across all competitions for the Gunners this season.

He has two-and-a-half years remaining on his contract at the Emirates.
