Arsenal best possible 4-3-3 v Basel: Sanchez axed

By Emma Sanders

Olivier Giroud should start ahead of Alexis Sanchez for Arsenal’s Champions League tie against Basel on Tuesday evening.

Sanchez scored a sensational hat-trick against West Ham in the 5-1 league victory on Saturday but Giroud should get the nod after missing the last two games through injury.

The Frenchman has scored five goals in his last seven appearances this season and should be given another opportunity while Arsene Wenger makes several changes in order to rest some key senior figures.

Midfielder Granit Xhaka should drop to the bench to make way for Mohammed Elneny, who could be in line to make his 15th appearance of the season against Basel.

Elneny should line up alongside Francis Coquelin, who has been a regular in the Arsenal first team this season, while Aaron Ramsey and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain should start in the wide attacking roles.

The England international has featured in each of Arsenal’s five European ties this season and deserves to retain his place in attack, alongside Mesut Ozil, Ramsey and Giroud.

Wenger has left Carl Jenkinson out of the squad for the Gunners’ last two fixtures and it’s unlikely he will be recalled so Gabriel should continue at right-back.

Kieran Gibbs should get the nod ahead of Nacho Monreal at left-back though, and the regular centre-back pairing of Shkodran Mustafi and Laurent Koscielny should complete the defence.

David Ospina, who has started every European game this season deserves to stand in net ahead of Petr Cech.

In other Arsenal news, the club face a battle with Italian giants Juventus for this midfielder following a £23 million bid.
