Arsenal boost as 28-year-old posts positive Twitter update ahead of Preston cup clash

Mesut Ozil could be set to make an unexpected return to Arsenal’s squad on Saturday to face Preston in the third round of the FA Cup.

The 28-year-old has missed the Gunners’ last two matches after suffering from the flu, which saw Arsenal beat Crystal Palace and draw against Bournemouth.

However, Ozil declared “I’m back” although “not yet at 100%” on his personal Twitter account and could now return to play some part in Saturday’s tea-time kick-off against Championship side Preston.

The Germany international was replaced by Lucas Perez in the number 10 role against Sam Allardyce’s Palace during his side’s 2-0 win, before Aaron Ramsey played in the advanced role against Eddie Howe’s Cherries.

Wenger will be delighted to see the former Real Madrid ace return to training, with must-win games coming up against Swansea, Burnley and Watford before a mouthwatering trip to Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge on February 4.

Competing on three fronts, the Gunners will now be looking to throw their hat into the ring as one of the favourites to win the FA Cup.

In order to do that, they must first see off Simon Grayson’s Preston on Saturday at Deepdale as they look to secure a safe passage into the hat for the fourth round.

Wenger may look to his number 10 to help the north London giants beat Preston, with Ozil desperate to maintain his fantastic form throughout the 2016-17 campaign.

Ozil has had a hand in 16 goals this season during his 23 league and cup appearances. Scoring nine himself, the attacking midfielder has provided a further seven in assists.

In other Arsenal news, this is the expected side to face the Lancashire outfit on Saturday.
