Arsenal could re-sign Ryan after 'surprise' interview reveal - pundit

Arsenal could re-sign Mat Ryan after Bernd Leno departs the club next year.

That is the view of former Highbury favourite Kevin Campbell, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Ryan, 29, spoke out on why he did not move to the Emirates permanently in the summer.

Ryan impressed while on loan with Mikel Arteta’s side in the 2020-21 campaign.

In an interview with the Daily Mail (November 8th), the Australia international revealed talks with technical director Edu regarding a permanent move went “really silent” over the summer.

Instead, Ryan joined La Liga high-flyers Real Sociedad on a two-year deal.

However, with current Gunners number two Bernd Leno approaching the final 18 months of his contract, Campbell suggested Ryan could yet return to the Emirates.

“I was surprised that the club didn’t make a concrete move for Ryan,” he told Football Insider.

“Obviously Edu and Arteta had their eyes on Aaron Ramsdale.

“As controversial as it was at the time, what a signing. Ramsdale was getting stick before he signed. You have to look at it as a very justified decision. Ramsdale has been a revelation.

“Leno is going to leave next year so I think we could see Mat Ryan come back as number two to Ramsdale.”

Speaking to the Mail, Ryan said: “It didn’t eventuate into a concrete opportunity after the loan spell and my decision was made for me.

“Our understanding was that they were looking for a homegrown goalkeeper from the conversations we had with them.”
