Arsenal fans react on Twitter as club reportedly closes in on defender deal

By Will Butcher

Arsenal fans on Twitter are not happy after hearing that centre-back Per Mertesacker has reportedly agreed terms over a new one-year deal.

The Times claimed that the Gunners club captain was set to extend his stay in north London by another 12 months despite failing to make a single appearance this season.

Mertesacker, a World Cup winner with Germany, has been sidelined since pre-season after picking up a knee injury against French side RC Lens in a friendly.

With his previous deal set to end in June, it is claimed that Arsene Wenger has decided to keep him until the summer of 2018 but is reportedly willing to let him leave on loan this month to get first-team action.

When Mertesacker does return from injury, it remains to be seen if he will be given a chance in the first team with Laurent Koscielny, Shkodran Mustafi and Gabriel Paulista ahead of him in the pecking order.

Arsenal fans reacted on Twitter angrily, with many wondering why Arsenal were spending money on a player who is not guaranteed to be injury-free or even make the first team next season.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Since his move to the Emirates Stadium in the summer of 2011 form German side Werder Bremen, Mertesacker has made 207 league and cup appearances for the Gunners.
