Santi Cazorla is set to undergo surgery and could be out of action for up to three months it has been revealed.
The club’s official website broke the news that Arsenal’s playmaker could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to a problem to his right ankle.
The midfielder will travel to Sweden at the beginning of next week to have surgery after attempts to recover in recent weeks have failed.
Cazorla has been out of action since picking up the injury during Arsenal’s 6-0 victory against Ludogorets in the Champions League on 19 October.
It was revealed that Cazorla has seen no improvement to his ankle since he started the rehabilitation programme over a month ago.
He isn’t expected to return to action for another three months so will miss a number of crucial clashes for Arsenal, including games against Manchester City, Chelsea and potentially Liverpool.
He was a crucial member of the side which finished runners-up to Leicester City last season, making 22 total appearances but still struggled with injuries. The news of his latest setback will have come as a major blow for Arsene Wenger.
Football Insider verdict:
Cazorla is a quality player and Arsenal will miss him. You’ve only got to look at the stats – they’ve won six out of seven Premier League games when he’s started, and only two out of five since. That’s a worry for Wenger and Arsenal fans alike. He brings out the best from Ozil and Sanchez and they need to find a way to rediscover that creativity in the middle without him. However, Arsenal have become accustomed to his absence and they have enough depth in midfield to deal with the loss. They now need to steady the ship and secure three points against a struggling West Ham on Saturday to get their title challenge back on course. If they can hold in at the top until Cazorla returns, they’ll have a great chance of maintaining their challenge through to the end of the season.
