Arsenal idol issues verdict as Ben White slammed by Gary Neville - 'let's get it right'

Kevin Campbell has leapt to the defence of Ben White after Arsenal lost 2-0 at Newcastle United on Monday night.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gunners and Everton striker said “it’s easy to criticise” the 24-year-old for his involvement in both goals but stressed that his teammates didn’t “help him out.”

White scored an own goal and was out of position for the Magpies’ second as Arsenal’s top-four hopes all but ended at St. James’ Park.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football (16 May), Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville pointed the finger at White for his defending for both goals.

The game was England international’s first since the 3-1 win over Man United last month.

White has been sidelined with a hamstring injury.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of White’s performance, Campbell said: “It is easy to criticise Ben White but let’s get it right, there was no way Arsenal were winning that game anyway.

“You could blame Ben White but it was his first game back. Yes, maybe he made a couple of bad decisions but his teammates could have helped him out.

“[Aaron] Ramsdale could have bailed him out on the first one but nobody looks at that.

“White gets caught out for the second one. He gets attracted to the ball. It was smart play from Callum Wilson.

“Arsenal were not in the game. I cannot think of one time they bothered the goalkeeper so you cannot pinpoint it on White.”
