Arsenal are keeping tabs on Bayern Munich defender David Alaba, according to a report.
The Mirror have claimed that the Gunners have got the 24-year-old left-back in their sights alongside Premier League rivals Manchester United.
The report states that the £40million-rated player is at the top of United manager Jose Mourinho’s January wish list.
However, it is also reported that Munich are likely to reject any attempts to take the Austria international from the Allianz Arena during the mid-season window.
The defender is a key part of Carlo Ancelotti’s side and he has played in 17 fixtures this season, with a return of six assists and one goal from his full-back position.
He is contracted until 2021 and has helped the German giants win the Bundesliga five times, while also winning the Champions League during his time at the club.
Manager Arsene Wenger will be fully aware of the talents of Alaba and he may be seeking a replacement for Nacho Monreal, who turns 31 in February.
The Frenchman will be seeking players in January, who he feels can help Arsenal in their quest to end their 12-year wait for a Premier League title.
There are also rumours that it could be the long-serving manager’s last season with the Gunners and he may make one last big signing before he departs.
Football Insider verdict:
Alaba would be a brilliant addition to any side in the Premier League given his calibre, experience and ability to thrive in a variety of positions. However, the £40million price-tag may be beyond Arsenal’s reach, especially with the free-spending Manchester United also keen on the full-back. Wenger has become more willing to spend big in recent transfer windows with Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and Granit Xhaka all joining for £30million-plus fees, but it is doubtful he will spend such a large amount on a left-back, even one with Alaba’s ability to play in a number of different roles. The French boss may look for a cheaper option in the future with Monreal growing older and Kieran Gibbs not up to the Arsenal standards.
