Finance guru lambasts Arsenal for taking the 'biggest cheque' amid criminal investigation
Arsenal will continue to take the “biggest cheque” on offer from the gambling industry despite the awkward situation surrounding Granit Xhaka.
That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the spot-foxing allegations hanging over their former captain.
The Swiss midfielder, 29, picked up a booking in the Gunners’ 4-1 win over Leeds United on 18 December last year that was deemed suspicious by the FA and sparked a six-month probe.
And the Daily Mail reported last Friday (17 June) that Xhaka is now under investigation by the National Crime Agency.
Arsenal have a partnership with cryptocurrency-based gambling platform Sportsbet.io.
But Maguire claims that neither the negative PR associated with the Xhaka scandal nor a government-mandated campaign again gambling sponsorship in football would force the Londoners to sever ties with the industry.

“Arsenal are exempt from any issues to do with the individual himself,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.
“There are enough degrees of separation and it is not seen as coordinated by the club in any way.
“But in any case, football has such a tin ear when it comes to its relations with the gambling industry.
“My understanding is that the proposals with regards to sponsorship are likely to be diluted. It might just be a voluntary ban as far as the Premier League are concerned.
“That’s what the Government wants. They are under a lot of pressure and have been lobbied extensively by the gambling industry. So, I suspect that Arsenal will just carry on as before and take the biggest cheque.”
