Pires delivers verdict on Wenger, shares what Arsenal need next season
By Russell Edge
Former Arsenal winger Robert Pires has stated that Arsenal must give boss Arsene Wenger a new contract to keep him at the club.
Wenger is under pressure from some of the club’s fan base, who have demonstrated and protested the 67-year-old with banners in and around the ground.
Arsenal have suffered six defeats in their last nine games, including two 5-1 defeats to Bayern Munich in the Champions League, and these fans believe it should be the end of Wenger’s 20-years in charge of the club.
Their last match ended in a 3-1 defeat at West Brom, with Arsenal fans making their feelings clear with a plane which flew over the Hawthorns carrying the message “No contract #Wenger out”.
However, Pires, who was a part of Arsenal’s ‘invincible’ squad of 2003/04 and won three FA Cups and two Premier League titles under Wenger, believes the club need to stick with the French manager.

Talking to Sky Sports News’ Premier League Daily Show on Friday, Pires said: “I think Arsenal need stability and Arsene Wenger is very important for Arsenal for now and for next season.
“The most important thing is for Arsene Wenger to extend his contract.”
The former French international, who earned 79 caps for his country, also tried to pinpoint where it was going wrong for Arsenal in recent weeks.
He claims that everyone at the club needs to show a level of spirit, and insists that the team are playing well despite the results.
“Sometimes you play good, sometimes it’s not good because some players maybe need more spirit, but the quality is there,” Pires told Sky Sports.
“When you play in the Premier League you need fight, spirit and commitment.
“The players and Arsene Wenger need to fight.”
Pires also highlights the absence of one player in particular who he feels would make a huge impact to the side were he able to play.
Santi Cazorla has been absent from Wenger’s side for nearly four months following an achilles injury which has required surgery and is set to be out until the end of the season.
“When you see the names on the pitch, they are great players like Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez but for me the most important thing is Arsenal are missing Santi Cazorla,” Pires told Premier League Daily on Sky Sports.
“He is one of the best players at Arsenal and has been injured now for more than four months and this has been a big problem.”
