Arsenal transfer window is over amid 'very strange' Xhaka update - pundit
Granit Xhaka may only have signed a contract extension at Arsenal because they have no more money to spend on new transfers.
That is the view of ex-Premier League shot-stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 28-year-old Swiss midfielder.
Sky Sports reported on 16 August that the former Gunners captain is now committed to the club until 2024 after signing a one-year extension.
Xhaka was set to end his five-year association with Arsenal and sign for Roma until that move collapsed in July.
He was stripped of the captaincy at the Emirates when he goaded supporters who booed him in a 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace in 2019.
As revealed by Football Insider earlier today, Aaron Ramsdale is set to sign for Arsenal and could be registered in time for Sunday’s clash with Chelsea.

Tet deal for the Sheffield United goalkeeper is believed to be worth £24million, rising to £30m with add-ons.
And Kenny claims that Xhaka’s new deal may be an indication that this will be the last of the spending at Arsenal this summer.
“It’s a very strange one,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.
“He was brilliant for Switzerland in the Euros and I was like, ‘wow, why can’t he be like that for Arsenal?’
“But I don’t get why they’ve given him another new deal. The only thing I can think is if they have no other options and no more money to spend.
“We don’t know what the finances are like. Maybe they can’t spend on transfers and that’s why they’re forced to keep the players they’ve got.
“It’s so weird because he’s been disruptive and he’s had issues before.
