Arsenal have opened talks with Liverpool target Gonzalo Higuain’s agent over a potential move to the Emirates this summer, according to a report.

The Mirror claim that the Gunners have stepped up their interest and have made contact with the striker's brother and agent Nicolas Higuain.

It was claimed by Argentinian outlet TyC Sports two weeks ago that the former Real Madrid forward was to snub all offers by putting pen to paper on a four-year deal worth £21million, equivalent to £100,000-a-week.

But Nicolas revealed the striker will not accept a new deal at Napoli unless president AngeloDe Laurentiis agrees to remove the daunting £78million release clause.

Higuain has scored 227 career goals, netting 38 times for Napoli this season in just 42 games but with a wealth of international interest, Higuain is yet to commit his future.

Arsenal are in the market for a new striker with doubts around Olivier Girouds ability to be the striker that can win them the Premier League.

The club had been close to signing Jamie Vardy earlier in the window but the deal fell through when the Englishman chose to sign a new contract with league champions Leicester.

In other Liverpool news, a fringe player has been offered an opportunity to revitalise his career at a top-tier club.
