24-year-old Arsenal star makes revelation about Wenger speculation, fans will be worried

By Matt Bullin

Arsenal centre back Shkodran Mustafi has admitted it can be difficult to play under Arsene Wenger with the cloud of speculation that surrounds him.

These comments come despite the Gunners’ 3-0 win over West Ham on Wednesday night thanks to goals from Mesut Ozil, Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud.

The speculation Mustafi refers to is of course the Wenger in or out debate that has been raging on for most of this season.

The 24-year-old netted his second Arsenal goal recently, in their 2-2 draw with Manchester City.

The German was one of a number of summer acquisitions made by Wenger when he signed from Valencia for £35 million.

He told talkSPORT: “[Seeing the speculation] is difficult, but we are professionals,”

“It’s part of our job to have a little bit thicker skin. But it is difficult because you see it everywhere.

“If he says he is going to leave or if he is going to stay, is it really going to help or will it make it worse? Who knows? I prefer to concentrate on what is going on, on the pitch.”

Mustafi has been somewhat of a revelation in the heart of Arsenal’s defence this term and he has made 33 league and cup appearances so far.

The German has been a feature in the Gunners side since returning from injury at the turn of the year and has played 90 minutes in every Premier League game in 2017.

Following Arsenal’s thrashing of West Ham they moved above Manchester United into fifth place.

They sit four points behind fourth-placed Manchester City and have a game in hand on their rivals.

Mustafi and his teammates will have to ignore the speculation surrounding their boss and kick on if they are to finish in the Champions League places come the end of the season.
