Alexandre Lacazette will replace Eddie Nketiah in the Arsenal XI tonight if he is passed fit to start.
That is according to former Gunners striker Kevin Campbell, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Arsenal’s team selection for the first leg of their Europa League semi-final against Villarreal.
Speaking to club media yesterday, Mikel Arteta revealed Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Kieran Tierney are “all in contention” for the clash at El Madrigal.
Lacazette, who is the Gunners’ top scorer this season with 17 goals, missed the 1-0 loss to Everton on Friday with a hamstring problem.
Campbell tipped Nketiah to “step aside” to make room in the starting XI for the French striker.
“Nketiah has just been filling in so I expect him to drop out against Villarreal,” he told Football Insider. “100 per cent.
“He did not have a great performance against Everton, he was not particularly strong. The game was a bore to be honest.
“I could see Nketiah stepping aside tonight for either Lacazette or Aubameyang.
“I think if Lacazette is fully fit I think he will start through the middle because he has played more regularly of late.
“Aubameyang has been through a lot so I think the bench would be the best place for him.”
Nketiah, 21, has struggled for regular game time at the Emirates this season and is currently the third-choice striker behind Lacazette and Aubameyang.
In an interview with beINSPORTS last year the striker revealed how Arsenal legend Ian Wright has helped him both on and off the pitch.
