'Are we watching rugby?' - Ex-refs chief: Arsenal goal should have been disallowed vs Chelsea
Martin Odegaard's winning goal should have been disallowed during Arsenal's narrow win over Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium.
That is according to former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee, Keith Hackett, who exclusively told Football Insider that Ezri Konsa's rugby-style challenge on Morgan Rogers was completely missed.
Rogers was heavily involved in the all-London clash on Sunday, 6 September, having opened the scoring within 77 seconds for the visitors.
However, efforts from Kai Havertz and Odegaard turned the game on its head after 50 minutes, with the Gunners eventually claiming all three points.
With Chris Kavanagh in charge, tensions were rising in North London, and the travelling side felt extremely hard done by after claiming a foul in the build-up to Arsenal's winner.
Replays showed Rogers being flung to the ground by his former teammates, Konsa, when trying to win the ball back off soon-to-be goalscorer, Odegaard.
'Are we watching rugby or football here?'
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Hackett could not believe his eyes, watching Konsa rugby tackle Rogers for a "straightforward" free-kick, one that was ignored.
"Are we watching rugby or are we watching football? Common sense says that's got to be a free-kick," he said.
"The Arsenal player has wrapped him and brought him around. The body movement is unnatural because it's a spinning motion.
"And you can't fake it in that situation where he's at. So, for me, I think that's a fairly simple, straightforward free kick.
"I think what Kavanagh was trying to do was, when we talk about that boiling kettle, I think he was quite happy to raise his tolerance levels, understanding it was a local derby."
Arsenal fans poke fun at Chelsea training regime
While Chelsea continue to be furious over the footage, the Gunners have rubbed salt into the wounds of those at Stamford Bridge.
After it was revealed that Xabi Alonso has introduced the use of tackle bags in training, that appears to have come back to haunt the Blues against their rivals.
Chelsea must now move forward and prepare to face Leeds United in the Carabao Cup, with an easier game against Hull City after that to bounce back in.
