Arsenal must pull the plug on Myles Lewis-Skelly transfer after Man United offer
Myles Lewis-Skelly proved his ability to perform on the biggest stage again on Sunday as Arsenal beat Manchester City 3-0 to win the Community Shield.
Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard scored as the Premier League champions destroyed Enzo Maresca's team, in what was his first competitive game in charge.
Last week, shock reports emerged that the Gunners had offered Lewis-Skelly, 19, for transfer to Manchester United and Chelsea this summer.
The England international does not want to leave and Arsenal deny actively looking to sell him, but an offer was reportedly made and came from somewhere.
The teenager struggled for much of last season at left-back, but began thriving at the base of the midfield at the end of the season and ultimately started the Champions League final.
The £75million arrival of Bruno Guimaraes may well reduce Lewis-Skelly's time on the pitch this season but Mikel Arteta will hope not to lose depth from his midfield.
Arsenal would be making a big mistake selling Myles Lewis-Skelly
Arsenal's willingness to make a big sale in the final weeks of the transfer window has been clear.
Gabriel Martinelli and Ethan Nwaneri both appear to be on the way out, with clubs in Italy paying close attention.
The Gunners have been notoriously bad sellers for many years now and hope to make a significant sale or two to earn breathing space with the profit and sustainability rules.
Some have suggested that one of those big sales may well be Lewis-Skelly, with the contact to Man Utd and Chelsea certainly made.
After Sunday's display, however, any plans of that nature will immediately have been dismissed.
The 19-year-old earned a wonderful assist in the opening seconds as he split the Man City defence to find Calafiori, who did not even need to take a touch before scoring.
Lewis-Skelly misplaced just two passes on the day, making four into the final third and winning two free-kicks.
The midfielder made a tackle, an interception, a recovery and two clearances, in a stunning performance.
Rio Ferdinand demands Lewis-Skelly signing
For Man United especially, Lewis-Skelly would likely represent the perfect signing.
The Red Devils are still searching for a new defensive midfielder following the departure of Casemiro, and also need to sign a left-back.
"If I'm Man United right now, I say press the green button and buy. Take him right now, what a player," former Man Utd defender Rio Ferdinand said on Sunday.
"Top player. There was no coincidence in the run-in that he was a massive part when he got brought into the team, in centre midfield by the way, in contributing to Arsenal winning that league.
"He was brilliant, what a player. Young kid, goes into any environment and produces. If he's on the market, and it's a good price, you've got to take him."
