Mikel Arteta must 'take a long look at himself' - expert fumes at Arsenal footage
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is at risk of distracting his players with his actions on the touchline.
That is the opinion of experienced former Tottenham, Everton and Aston Villa scout, Bryan King, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.
The Spaniard has attracted significant criticism in recent years for a seeming inability to stay inside the lines of his technical area.
Arteta was captured on camera at it again as Arsenal beat Chelsea 2-1 on Sunday, with some fans calling on the FA to take action.
The Gunners have started the season in superb form, and won their fifth consecutive match on Wednesday as they began their Champions League campaign with victory over Napoli.
The Premier League champions hope to retain their crown this season, with vengeance targeted in Europe after they were denied the Champions League by a penalty shootout in May.
'I don't like the way Mikel Arteta behaves'
Arteta has been a controversial figure in the Premier League in the years he since he returned to Arsenal.
The Spaniard is fiery and passionate in his methods, with many fans taking issue with the way he conducts himself.
That fire often leads him out of the technical area, with FA rules dictating that he should stay inside it during games.
"Arsenal yesterday, I mean you pay money to see that but what I don't like is the way Arteta behaves," King told Football Insider.
"He wants to take a long look at himself. There's a box there for a reason, what he needs to be charging about up and down the touchline for, I do not know.
"The biggest thing in football, as a footballer, you need concentration, and if your manager is jumping about like a bleeding lunatic, what does that put you in. It's all right being involved but be involved in as a football manager.
"You're the man that everybody's looking for, the right decision, you're not looking for the set piece coach or somebody sitting beside him. You're looking for Arteta, he makes the decision and you don't have to charge about on the bloody line."
What has Arteta said about his behaviour?
The FA are yet to take any action over Arteta's antics on the touchline, and it appears that they do not plan to.
The Arsenal manager was asked about the criticism in 2023, and said: "I care a lot about the reputation of the club especially.
"I am who I am, and I try to do my best to defend the players, defend the club and if that comes down with certain people that they won't like it. For sure, if everybody would like it, it wouldn't be very good, I think.
"It's not that I don't care but I care a lot more especially when I am doing my job when I am sitting at home I care about my wife's things and people's things but you don't see that.
"But when I'm in the public eye I care a lot. What can we do is the best for the club and the best to defend the players and this is my role as well."
