Spurs Insider: This is the only way Tottenham would sell Cristian Romero to Arsenal

Tottenham Hotspur would only sell Cristian Romero to Arsenal for an extraordinary amount of money.

That is the opinion of former senior Tottenham scout, Bryan King, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.

The 28-year-old is expected to leave this summer, with the Lilywhites' bitter rivals among the clubs interested in him.

Romero is reportedly open to the move to Arsenal, but is expected to ultimately join Atletico Madrid or Barcelona.

Tottenham have made it clear that they will not sell the Argentina international to the Premier League champions, even despite his wishes.

Romero is the club captain and would mirror Sol Campbell's move to Arsenal in 2001 if he were to make the move across North London.

Cristian Romero's agent has been 'a little bit naughty'

Romero shares a complicated relationship with the Tottenham fans, who initially fell in love when he joined from Atalanta in 2021.

The defender was tough-tackling, passionate and aggressive but technically brilliant and immediately became the talk of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

In the last couple of years, however, the 28-year-old has become more of a liability, making poor decisions and getting sent off repeatedly.

Romero's transformation from hero to villain would be complete if he signed for Arsenal.

"I think this is agent and player. Certainly agent, who's been a little bit naughty here and trying to get interest from abroad, which obviously there would be," King told Football Insider.

"Tottenham can't. The only way they could sell him to Arsenal is if it's a ridiculous amount of money. Obviously the most famous players who have moved from Spurs to Arsenal are Sol Campbell and Pat Jennings.

"I wouldn't exactly put Romero in that kind of class of English player or Great British player. But I just think this is an agent who's trying to stir up publicity and it's bad publicity for Tottenham because it unnerves the squad.

"It makes the supporters start to think: 'Jesus Christ, why would we even think about it?' But the only way that would happen if it's a ridiculous amount of money. It'd be over £100m. It'd have to be. Otherwise, what's the point?"

If Romero cannot beat them, join them

10 North London derbies have taken place between Arsenal and Tottenham since Romero joined Tottenham.

The Lilywhites have won just one of those games - at the end of the 2021-22 season - but the defender was missing through injury.

Of the six he has played in, he has lost five and drawn just one, scoring himself in one game.

Joining Arsenal would at least be one way for Romero to stop being beaten by them.
