Stefan Borson shares verdict as Arsenal staff fear job cuts

Arsenal making staff redundant will make very little different when players are earning hundreds of thousands of pounds each week.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that he believes recent news emerging from the Emirates is simply a "red herring".

It was reported on Friday, 11 September, that staff in North London were are fearing potential job cuts, with financial accounts showing consecutive years of losses.

Despite winning the Premier League title and reaching the Champions League final last season, not everything is as it should be behind the scenes.

The Telegraph understands that final decisions are yet to be finalised, leaving many in the dark over their futures at the Emirates Stadium.

Comparisons, understandably, have been made to Manchester United's financial situation and the hundreds of reduncies at Old Trafford.

Arsenal finances won't be fixed with redundancies

However, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson does not believe that the two situations are alike, with redundancies unlikely to make a big enough impact.

"It's all a red herring. If you look at the average wage of a player on the fringe of the squad, that's the equivalent of 100 people's wages," he said.

"Clubs love to bring in management consultants and reduce the overall wage bill. They feel like they're doing they feel like they're running the business tightly.

"The problem is it's a very unusual business, a football club, because you've just got so much of the wage cost that's in individual players.

"So to start chopping the lower levels, it might be the right thing to do, but it's not going to make a big difference to the bottom line."

Understandably, supporters are upset over the emerging news, with many struggling to understand why the Gunners are struggling financially.

Mikel Arteta added several big names to his squad over the summer too, and the timing of this news makes it seem like the staff mean much less than the players.
