Keith Wyness suggests Eberechi Eze’s new Arsenal valuation ahead of January

Published on:

Arsenal midfielder Eberechi Eze is unlikely to be worth £40million in today’s transfer market due to his recent poor form.

That is according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the Gunners have little to gain from potentially selling him in the next 12 months.

The 28-year-old has struggled for form in the Premier League once again this season, despite scoring in each of his team’s last two Champions League assignments.

Wyness believes that Arsenal fell into the trap of purely buying for talent when they splashed £70million on Eze in 2025, rather than buying him because they needed to improve in that area.

Mikel Arteta is blessed with some of the best midfield options in world football, and that has meant Eze has regularly been denied consistent minutes since his move from Crystal Palace.

Martin Odegaard is firmly ahead of him in the attacking midfield pecking order at the moment, and his opportunities to impress have been few and far between of late.

Arsenal to adjust transfer plan after Eberechi Eze move

Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Arsenal have been caught in a similar trap to Liverpool by collecting talent for their squad, rather than addressing specific needs with their signings.

The Scottish businessman feels that they have been made to pay for that with Eze’s poor form, and now have limited options to offload him.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness explained that Arsenal would have to face up to a huge loss if they decided to cash in on him.

“I think they'd be crystallising a loss if they did sell him, because I think he's worth about £50m on the books right now, and they'd probably be looking at a valuation of somewhere around £40m, given the way his form has been,” he said.

“It's also a symptom that Arsenal were doing a bit like Liverpool have been doing in terms of buying talent rather than buying for need, and I think that's something that they've got to consider as well.

“They've got to be thinking about that a bit more, and they're stacked in midfield right now, perhaps too much, and that's the sort of thing I mean. They've got to start looking at where the need is and buying for that rather than just acquiring talent when they can.”

Eberechi Eze ‘running out of time’

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown recently told Football Insider that Eze is “running out of time” to prove his worth to Arsenal long-term.

The ex-recruitment man believes that the England international has been “nowhere near good enough” since his big-money move, and is not doing himself justice at the moment.

Brown believes that Arteta doesn’t really know what to do to get the best out of Eze, and is growing increasingly concerned by his poor domestic form.

The prospect of a sale is not on the radar for Arsenal at the moment, but that could soon change if the player’s form doesn’t improve.
