Joe Gomez would be a "definite upgrade" on Kourtney Hause if Aston Villa can sign him in January, according to Alan Hutton.

The former Claret and Blue defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 24-year-old Liverpool fringe star would push the Midlands club to "new heights".

According to Calciomercato last Friday (17 December), Aston Villa have made an offer for Gomez ahead of the winter transfer window opening next month.

However, the report claims Liverpool are unwilling to let the defender depart mid-season.

Hutton suggested the addition of Gomez would be a good step in Aston Villa's plans to break into the Premier League's European spots.

“Gomez would be a definite upgrade on the likes of Kourtney Hause,” he told Football Insider's Ewan Kingsbury.

“If he were to come in, he would be pushing for that first-team spot, obviously, and I think either Tyrone Mings or Ezri Konsa could come out of that side for him.

“The way Gerrard is planning going forward, along with the owners – they’re trying to break into those European places. To do that, you need competition within the side across the board.

“He’s a really high-calibre player and he would keep everyone on their toes. It would be a good signing and would only push the first-choice pair Villa have to new heights.”

England international Gomez, who has been described as a “sensational footballer” by Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, has played just 336 minutes of football so far this term.
