Aston Villa can save millions after 'huge' Ashley Young update - pundit

Aston Villa can save millions by handing Ashley Young a new contract, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer claimed giving Young a new deal means the club do not have to “spend big” on a left-back to act as cover for Lucas Digne.

Young, who is 37 next month, is out of contract at Villa Park at the end of June.

Fabrizio Romano reported on Tuesday (14 June) that there is a “very good chance” he will sign a new deal.

“All that will be happening is they will be negotiating the contract,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“I’m sure they will keep him. He’s so versatile, a professional and can still do a great job. I can 100 per cent see him re-signing.

“He can be cover for left-back, left-wing, right-back and as a number 10. He can play so many positions it’s perfect.

“When Digne is injured, he’s got a perfect replacement. Rather than having to go out and spend big on another left-back, he’s got one there in Ashley Young who can play everywhere.

“I think it’s a no-brainer and I’m sure they are just negotiating terms and it will be signed.”

Digne is Villa’s only senior left-back contracted for the 2022-23 season after Matt Targett joined Newcastle United for £15million last week (8 June).

Young moved back to Villa Park on a free transfer last summer (2021) and featured in 25 games across all competitions in the 2021-22 campaign.
