Kenny can't believe source's update on Aston Villa potentially sacking Smith

Aston Villa would be mad to consider giving Dean Smith the boot.

So says ex-Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the under-fire Villa boss.

This site revealed on 14 September that Smith is fighting for his job and could be sacked if he fails to inspire a turnaround in results before the international break.

His relationship with chief executive Christian Purslow has soured and his fate could potentially be sealed before the October international break.

Villa have picked up four points from their opening four games and currently occupy 12th place in the Premier League.

And Kenny has urged the powerbrokers at Villa to dial back on their “strange” stance regarding Smith‘s future.

“It would be a daft decision,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“Why give him all that money to spend and then sack him? There is obviously something going on behind the scenes between him and the board.

“We’ve seen that at Sheffield United with Chris Wilder, but I think it would be a stupid move if they did sack him.

“He got them promoted, he kept them up, and then they finished 11th last year. So to consider sacking him, I find that really puzzling.

“They haven’t given him a fair crack at it. I know they got all the money in for Grealish, but they spent it all on some great signings.

“They have not even started the seasons that badly.”
