Paul Robinson has tipped Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard to sign a creative player in January.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs goalkeeper said his ex-England teammate Gerrard "clearly alluded" to an offensive signing in an interview with Jamie Carragher on Sky Sports.

Gerrard told Carragher (5 December) he believes he can take Villa forward if he can strike a balance in his side and "get the right players in who can hurt opposition".

Robinson is adamant a creative player will be targeted in January after a solid start defensively to the Gerrard era.

"Steven was clearly alluding to another forward signing," he told Football Insider.

"With Watkins they have got the firepower and pace up front. He can stretch teams in behind.

"But I think they lack a bit of creativity. Of course [Jack] Grealish has left and it was an almost impossible task to replace him.

"The defence has looked great since Gerrard has come in. [Tyrone] Mings looks a different player. Let's not forget they lost five games on the bounce before Gerrard arrived.

"It sounds like he wants a bit more quality in that final third which is understandable. Any manager is going to want to put his own stamp on the team. If that is the area he has identified, at least he is honest."
