Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed Aston Villa are not likely to pull off an audacious move for Chelsea outcast Romelu Lukaku.

The former Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the out-of-favour 29-year-old would not get into Unai Emery's side ahead of Ollie Watkins.

According to journalist Ekrem Konur (18 March), Aston Villa and Everton are monitoring the situation of Lukaku as he prepares to return from his loan at Inter Milan at the end of the season.

Sources told Football Insider on Wednesday (22 March) that Chelsea have resigned themselves to taking an enormous loss on the Belgium international - although it is not thought a Premier League move is likely.

Lukaku earns a reported £325,000-a-week on his contract with the Blues – and the Londoners are subsidising part of that salary while he is on loan in Serie A.

Aston Villa could move for a new striker in the summer window after allowing Danny Ings to join West Ham in January.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I don’t think he’s the answer for Villa.

“Lukaku is not the same player we’ve been so used to seeing in years gone by.

“The wages will just be silly, as well. I think it’s a no-go.

“If you look at the form right now – would you put Lukaku or Watkins in the starting lineup?

“You’d have to pick Watkins. I don’t think Lukaku comes in to be second choice, especially on those silly wages.”
