Aston Villa are in a six-team race to sign versatile Oxford winger Marvin Johnson, according to a report.

The Birmingham Mail claim Midlands rivals Birmingham and West Brom are competing with Villa by keeping close tabs on the prolific left-sided player.

It is said Johnson, 26, has also attracted interest from Stoke, Derby and Reading after a string of fine performances since moving to League One outfit Oxford from Motherwell last summer.

Johnson has been a mainstay of the Oxford team this season, scoring eight goals and 12 assists in 43 matches for the third tier club.

This adds to the goal and assist he scored for Scottish Premiership side Motherwell in four matches at the start of the campaign.

Despite his impressive creating and scoring record, Johnson has not been used solely as an attacking player by Oxford, with half of his appearances coming at left-back this season.

Born in Birmingham, Johnson had spells at Solihull Moors, Coleshill Town, Romulus, Kidderminster Harriers and Hednesford Town before making the step up to the professional game in Scotland.

He made 64 appearances for Motherwell, scoring 11 goals and supplying 17 assists.
