'He's killing us', 'Putrid' - Aston Villa fans brutalise Bruce favourite after draw v Brentford

By Danny Wright

Aston Villa have not held back in their fierce criticism of Glenn Whelan after they were held to a goalless draw by Brentford on Saturday.

Neither side managed to find the net in what was a dour 90 minutes of football at Villa Park, leaving Brentford to continue their search for a first win of the Championship season.

Whelan, 33, was one of a small number players to sign for Villa during the summer transfer window for a fee but he is yet to convince the supporters that he is worthy of his fairly low price-tag.

The former Stoke midfielder has already emerged as a favourite of manager Steve Bruce despite his poor form.

He has played 90 minutes of all six Championship fixtures this term, but fans are now calling on Bruce to end his run in the side after yet another shocker against Brentford.

One fan absolutely brutalised the Irishman, claiming that he is “killing” the club he supports.

Here is a selection of their tweets:

Whelan came into the Villa squad off the back of being a regular starter for Stoke in the Premier League so it can be seen as a surprise that he hasn’t been able to hold his own in the Championship under the leadership of Bruce.

It seems most fans cannot wait for Mile Jedinak to return, however Bruce’s stubbornness could see the Republic of Ireland international continue to play in the side.

In other Aston Villa news, the Villains were beaten by one of their Championship rivals to snapping up this forward in the summer.
