Aston Villa fans react on Twitter to confirmed Johnstone deal

By Dominic Toner

Aston Villa have completed a deal for Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone on loan – and the club’s supporters are sceptical about his signing on Twitter.

The Midlands club confirmed on their official website that the 23-year-old has joined on loan until the end of the season.

He will now compete for a starting position alongside Mark Bunn and Peirluigi Gollini in the starting XI.

Steve Bruce is yet to settle on a number one this season and 21-year-old Gollini has struggled to settle since his £4million arrival in the summer.

Aston Villa fans feel that Johnstone’s deal is a strange one as the 23-year-old is another youthful option, while Bunn is the only senior choice at 32.

Johnstone has left Old Trafford in search of regular first-team action and has already been loaned out to a number of clubs during his career.

The young goalkeeper made four appearances in the Championship last season with Preston and also helped the club achieve promotion from League One in the 2014/15 campaign.

He has been playing for Man United’s Under-23s this season and will now hope to aid Villa’s promotion push to the Premier League.

Bruce’s side have had huge problems with their goalkeepers this season and Johnstone is set to rival the existing options for the number one position.

In other Aston Villa transfer news, the club are set to seal the £3million signing of a midfield goal machine.
