Steve Bruce has confirmed that Christopher Samba is training with Aston Villa – and fans on Twitter want the free agent to replace Tommy Elphick in the side.
Summer signing Elphick has been in the first team picture of late after he barely featured during the early part of Bruce’s tenure.
The 29-year-old started Villa’s last league game against Newcastle with Rafa Benitez’ side securing a 2-0 win at St James’ Park.
With Samba now on the scene at Bodymoor Heath and the possibility that he can be rewarded with a contract fans have delivered their verdict on some of their defensive players.
Many supporters slated Elphick who has been inconsistent at the Midlands club since making his switch from Premier League side Bournemouth last July.
One fan stated that Samba is better than the current first team player, while others feel James Chester would form a strong partnership with the former Blackburn man.
Elphick was not the only one picked out by the supporters, academy product Nathan Baker also had criticism hurled his way after a number of poor displays.
Bruce’s side have lost their last five games, conceding 11 goals as the promotion expert has played a variation of formations during that time.
From playing three at the back to having just two normal centre-backs, Bruce and Villa have struggled for form and consistency.
Overall, the Villa Park faithful were pretty clear that Samba is a better option than the current crop, in particular, the much-criticised Elphick.
Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:
For me Elphick and Baker have been weak recently. Need to try something else

baker and Elphick just not good enough for me. Samba and Chester could work well.
